US Gallon vs. Imperial Gallon: A 20% Gap

The US and the United Kingdom both use a unit called the "gallon," but they are not the same size. The US gallon is 128 fluid ounces (3,785 mL). The Imperial gallon -- used in the UK, Canada for some purposes, and several Caribbean nations -- is 160 Imperial fluid ounces (4,546 mL). The Imperial gallon is roughly 20% larger.

To make things more confusing, US and Imperial fluid ounces are also slightly different. A US fluid ounce is 29.57 mL; an Imperial fluid ounce is 28.41 mL. The ounces are smaller in the Imperial system but there are more of them per gallon, making the Imperial gallon bigger overall.
